Ask A Question

What are my thoughts on HYROX?

I’m not really into recreational fitness competitions of any kind so I’m probably not the one to ask. I can get behind a 5k for charity but I don’t understand the popularity of these races, including marathons. If this is a way to spend time with your friends then I can see how that would be fun.

I do think the average person who specializes in HYROX is lacking strength. I bet the top HYROX athletes strength train, but the average HYROX enthusiast seems to have a marathon build - kinda skinny and lanky, and probably injured frequently due to the volume of their training.

Why do we offer HYROX?

Honestly, I was trying to keep some people happy and offer something that could compliment their weightlifting. I also hoped to draw in some people training for HYROX, but not currently lifting. I think there is potential there still, but I also think HYROX is a little off-brand for us as a weightlifting gym.

I understand that some of you want to move more throughout the week and I think moving more could be beneficial for many of you, but I don’t think HYROX is it. The volume in class is too much on top of weightlifting. I think there are better ways to add some conditioning to your week without doing a 40 minute workout once or twice a week.

Stay tuned for updates to the HYROX program.

Do I need a weightlifting belt?

World record deadlifts are done with 2 belts. A flexible inner belt and a stiff outer belt. Plus there is a special “suit” worn so they are basically wearing 3 belts.

The average person can pull decent weight with no belt.

Sometimes people will wear the belt and not adequately brace. This is user error, but common among people who are new to belts. The belt does not replace bracing, it should make your bracing more effective. Other than possible lack of bracing there are no downsides to a weightlifting belt.

If you are having any back issues it’s a form and/or a core problem - a belt will not fix any of that.

You do not need a weightlifting belt, but we do recommend them.

Go to about 1:40 in the video below and you’ll see all the belts and layers come off. There is a new world record but this video showed the layers better.
