Sunday 2/9

Hey, ladies!

Before I get to this week’s Q&A, I wanted to share a fun hack!…

Is your current protein bar actually a good source of protein? Let’s find out.

Here’s the hack: Look at the amount of protein on the nutrition label and add a 0 to that number. Ideally the protein bar will not have any more calories than that number.

Let’s use this GoMacro bar for example…

We can see by the nutrition label that this peanut butter chocolate chip GoMacro bar has 11g of protein. Ideally this bar would have about 110 calories total. But, when we look at the calories of this bar, we see it has 290 calories. So, we know this bar isn’t the best source of protein for the investment on calories.

Now lets talk about some recommendations and options in this week’s Q&A…

Sunday Q&A

Good protein bar options?

First… I wouldn’t recommend protein bars be a part of your daily diet.

Protein bars that actually have enough protein to be worth consuming are usually filled with additives and preservatives that wreak havoc on the gut, causing a whole slew of issues.

On the flip side, protein bars that have better ingredients are usually low in protein and high in calories, which doesn’t allow you to get sufficient protein for the investment on calories.

I would highly encourage 1 of 3 things instead…

1.) Prioritize protein coming from whole foods. This may take more planning and a bit of extra work, but it will be the best option.

2.) Have a protein shake. This way you are in control of the balance of protein to calories, as well as in control of the ingredients. Another better option.

3.) Have meat sticks/bars. This a great option in place of traditional protein bars. They provide protein without the excess calories and excess ingredients. (Epic or Chomps are good options)

Protein Bar Options:

*I wouldn’t recommend protein bars be a staple in anyone’s diet, but once in while for when you’re in a pinch and need something quick, it may be necessary. Below I’ve categorized some options. These are not in any specific order and some may be better/worse than others under the category they are listed. It is also dependent on what “flavor” bar you choose. There’s plenty more bar options out there as well, but this is just the list I’ve curated.*

Worse Ingredients/Higher Protein:

If you have any questions about a specific protein bar (listed above or not) you’re unsure of or just want some feedback, we’re happy to help!
